Approx. 500 Brown Pelicans at South Ponto Beach, Nov. 30, 2021
By – 11:51 am
At 11:30 today I observed approx. 500 or more Brown Pelicans at South Ponto Beach in a feeding frenzy in the Batiquitos Lagoon mouth/jetty. Also of note, were many 100’s of gulls, dozens of loons and many other pelagic birds too far offshore to id without a scope. All parking was taken so I only had a quick look due to being parked illegally. Gretchen NellLeucadia
North American Birds – Fall 2021
By – 9:46 am
County Coordinators/Contributors:The Fall Migration Season (1 August through 30 November 2021) is ended, and we solicit reports for inclusion in the Southern California Region of NORTH AMERICAN BIRDS. Reports should be arranged with species in the taxonomic order followed by the American Ornithologists Union (Check-List of North American Birds 1998 and all Supplements) and the American Birding Association (7th edition of the ABA Checklist, 2009 revised through 2020). Reports of species included on the California Bird Records Committee (CBRC) review list http://www.californiabirds.orgmust be accompanied by documentation (written description, photographs, etc.).Similar documentation should also accompany reports of species unusual forthe location or season. Full names, with all initials, should be used in the reports (this reduces the potential for different observers having the same initials, and makes it simpler to acknowledge contributors) – John P. Doe in lieu of John Doe.Reports should be sent to the appropriate County Coordinators (listed below)or directly to Guy McCaskie by 20 December 2021. NORTH AMERICAN BIRDS can not exist without your input.David Compton (Santa Barbara County)davcompton60@… Tom M. Edell (San Luis Obispo County)tedell@… Kimball L. I’ve received several messages guessing a dull Yellow Warbler, which I agree with. That was my first guess when I saw it, so glad my gut is working :)Thanks!– Nick ThorpeUniversity Heights
Mystery Vireo/Warbler – TRV Ballfields
By – 2:20 pm
Hi all, I have a mystery bird for any intrepid sleuths.Copying description from my ebird report for speed.
Pale creamy colored underside with some faint yellow. More yellow on undertail, but still faint. Wings are a darker shade of a similar color scheme, one might call it “light grey” or “light olive”. Face is plain. No stripes or other markings anywhere. Bill is noticeably long. Call sounds like quietly clicking together shot glasses; a bit resonant and very bright. Calling quite frequently in trees along Sunset here: (32.5582061, -117.0771722).
Took a probably poor recording and definitely poor pictures.
Bird is still present in trees as of 2:20pm 11/29/2021eBird report:

A Monday morning trip to Jacumba produced the usual eight Harris’s Hawks, mostly along the northeast edge of town, early in the morning, But scattered individuals popped up elsewhere in town as well. Continuing male Scott’s Oriole and one “Pink-sided” Dark-eyed Junco, which is scarce but fairly regular at Jacumba in late fall and early winter.Yesterday, the 28th, a Black and white Warbler continued in the Stonecrest/Serra Mesa area, and given that it has been hanging around for a while now suggests it’s going to winter there. And the adult male Summer Tanager continued at Linda Vista Community Park, a returning bird.Paul Lehman, San DiegoSent from the all new AOL app for Android
White-throated sparrow – Ramona
By – 11:27 am
This morning I birded at Dos Picos county park in Ramona. The water level in the pond is very low, giving access to sets of reeds that would otherwise be flooded. I found a White-throated Sparrow in the reeds on the north side of the pond (near the wedding gazebo), along with a couple of Golden-crowned Sparrows. On the south side of the pond I found a mixed flock of Fox Sparrows and Hermit Thrushes – at least 16 individual birds. I felt there were at least 12 Fox Sparrows – the most I have ever seen together. Several looked to be the Thick-billed type, but there was at least one Sooty in the group. I also thought I was seeing Slate-colored. The birds were moving back and forth across the trail from low brush to the reeds and back. These birds had no interest in being photographed. In other news – the Bald Eagle was sitting above the nest at about 10 am on Rangeland Rd. For those who haven’t heard, the eagle’s nest was mostly destroyed in a wind gust on Nov 21 and we are watching to see any effort to rebuild. https://ebird.org/checklist/S98249433 Nancy ChristensenRamona

This morning the four Snow Geese and American Wigeon continued until a coyote drove them off at about 8:30. Also a Bell’s Sparrow don’t think it was a Sagebrush.Alison HiersCarlsbad
