Virginia Rail 10am Guajome Park 11/22

My first time birding Guajome Park. Along the lake pond here: 33.246186,-117.273911 I got great looks at a VIRGINIA RAIL as it was near the south shoreline close to a bench.

Tricolored Heron, Little Blue Heron – San Elijo Lagoon

The Tricolored Heron first reported by Sean Buchanan on November 13 continues today (Sat. 21st) at San Elijo Lagoon, briefly in the same scope view as the continuing Little Blue Heron. As of 8:00, both birds are currently in the area of the lagoon northeast of the Rios Avenue entrance, closer to the Manchester Avenue side of the lagoon.

Guajome Park Sapsucker

First bird this morning at 10:00am was a young male Yellow-bellied Sapsucker. Red chin and forehead, no red on back of head. Call matched up with Yellow-bellied. Last time I saw one here at Guajome was with a group led by Steve Shunk a few years ago.

The winter onslaught of Summer Tanagers

Dear friends,

To add to this winter’s Summer Tanagers, I heard one, and saw a brief flash of red in a treetop, in Balboa Park yesterday 18 November 2020—on the east side of Park Blvd. between Upas St. and Morley Field Drive (thus between Roosevelt Jr. High School and the Blind Center).

Also a couple times in the past week a Black-throated Gray Warbler in jacaranda trees along Park Blvd. just south of University Ave.—just around the corner from where I saw it last February. It’s amazing how minimal of habitat some wintering birds return to in successive years.

Good birding,

Philip Unitt

Safari Park Observations

A few observations from the Safari Park today (11/19):
Summer Tanager, adult male, east side of Walkabout Australia.  I heard, but did not see, what was
possibly a second individual near the southeast side of the elephant exhibit.
Zone-tailed Hawk, adult, flew directly over Pumzika Point.
Prarie Falcon, adult over African Outpost.
American White Pelican, 80+ at the African Outpost lake.

Tricolored Heron San Duego River.

I arrived too late to see the SEOW. but just to the west, about where the entry road comes into the old road there was a Tricolored Heron  out in the mid channel.
