Re: Cackling Goose at Santee Lakes

At 5:30 this evening (Thu, Nov 1) the Cackling Goose and Common Loon continued by the spots described by Jeremiah from this morning.

The Cackling Goose (which was about double the size of the nearby coots) was feeding in the grass in the NE corner of Lake 3, and the Common Loon was swimming very close to the shore and dock in the NE corner of Lake 4.

Scissor-tailed flycatcher in Coronado

Never seen one before so can’t be 100% sure, but pretty sure there was a Scissor-tailed Flycatcher on the wires above the roundabout at Pomona and Adella until it got chased off by some bluebirds and a Kingbird. Shot photos and video but only have my phone with me unfortunately.

Clay-colored sparrow at UCSD, La Jolla

There’s been a clay-colored sparrow mixed in with a small flock of juncos on the little patch of grass along the pedestrian path just to the west of Geisel library, between the library and the parking spots along the south end of Hopkins Lane [so a few feet southeast of the turnabout next to the outdoor book-drops.

Parking on campus is a nightmare and expensive except on weekends [obey the 24/7 “A" only signs though], but if you have access, it’s a lovely little bird, and since it’s used to people walking past, pretty easy to get close to.

Imm. Sapsucker Colina del Sol Park

As I recall, any imm. plumaged sapsucker in winter should be Yellow-bellied. If that is the case I just had a sapsucker with a brown back & faint Yellow-bellied/Red-naped pattern on the brown head. It was in the Brazilian Pepper Trees north of the parking lot at the end of 52nd Place, accessed off 52nd Street, north of University Ave. It is not currently in view as I write this email.

Cackling Goose at Santee Lakes

Thursday morning around 0815 there was a Cackling Goose on the bank and in the water in the northeast corner of Santee Lake #3.  Very small goose, with short neck, stubby bill, and rounded head.  Upper breast was dark brown and there was no white at the base of the neck.  Also saw continuing Common Loon at northeast corner of Lake #4 and continuing Cattle Egret at north shore of Lake #1.  Did not see previously-reported White-faced Ibis.
